Dr. Chang Quoted in Slate Magazine Article

Dr. Chang was quoted several times in a Slate Magazine article regarding some strange things the body does. The article organized in a question and answer format, includes several ENT questions for which Dr. Chang provided answers to.

Such answered questions by Dr. Chang included:

  Occasionally my hearing will ‘go out’ and everything will go dull.. and then a high pitched frequency screeches for a few minutes. No one else hears it and everything else seems really hushed while it's happening. Maybe it's the aliens.

  I can make a loud rumbling sound in my ears at will without moving any muscle in my face. I have no idea what this is called but it kind of sounds like when you put your ear to a seashell at the beach.

  Once in a while when I eat something sugary I get a really sharp pain under/around my ears. like really sharp. It sucks. I did some reading on it, I think it has something to do with the salivary glands?

  Tonsil stones or “Tonsillolith”. They're small white/yellowish blob that randomly comes out of my mouth sometimes... And they smell extremely bad.

Dr. Chang Makes Front Page News in Local Newspaper with Practice Merger

On January 31, 2014, Dr. Chang made front page news of the Fauquier Times local newspaper with his planned practice merger with Blue Ridge Orthopaedics and Spine Center to become part of the Greater Piedmont Medical Association. With this merger, he will be also joining Dominion Internal Medicine (Drs. Robert Lin and Michael & Jennifer Ackerman) as well as Urological Associates of the Piedmont (Dr. Pfeffer). In spite of this merger, the practice name, addres, location, staff, phone number, etc will all still remain the exactly same.

Dr. Chang Quoted in Washington Post Regarding Hearing Damage from Noise

The Washington Post on April 8, 2013, published a story about how loud noises can lead to hearing loss, even in young teenagers.

Dr. Chang was liberally quoted throughout this informative article.

"...That’s according to Christopher Chang, an ear, nose and throat doctor at Fauquier ENT Consultants in Warrenton, who sees patients every day with hearing-related issues. “What he’s hearing is way too loud, because it’s concentrated directly into the ear itself,” he says of my son, adding that the anatomy of the ear magnifies sound as it travels through the ear canal." 

"And when someone turns the music up louder? Well, in short spurts, that’s okay. Loudness is only one part of the equation. How long you’re exposed to loud noises also affects your risk. “The biggest concern is that teens and 20-somethings are using music players so regularly,” Chang says. 

"Cheap earplugs that you can buy at the drugstore offer some protection, Chang says. In addition, there are specialized ear plugs, such as ones for hunters that amplify low-level sounds and block out gunshots. Musicians’ earplugs reduce noise with higher fidelity than the muffling effect that regular plugs have: You want to hear the music that you and your orchestra mates are playing, after all."

Dr. Chang Mentioned on NBC News Regarding Sound of One's Voice

Dr. Chang was mentioned today in a NBC News article on their popular Body Odds section. The article entitled "why you hate the sound of your own voice" describes why people sound and often dislike the way their voice sounds on a recording.

What we hear when we speak, however, is air- and bone-conducted sounds. Vibrations from our vocal cords directly reach the cochlea. Our skulls deceive us by, in fact, lowering the frequency of these vibrations along the way, which is why we often perceive ourselves as higher-pitched when we listen to a recording.  

“When [someone] listens to a recording of their voice speaking, the bone-conducted pathway that they consider part of their ‘normal’ voice is eliminated, and they hear only the air-conducted component in unfamiliar isolation—what everybody else actually hears,” says Dr. Chris Chang, an otolaryngologist at Fauquier Ear, Nose & Throat Consultants in Warrenton, Virginia. Dr. Chang Quoted in the Wall Street Journal

The Wall Street Journal on 3/15/13 published a story on how voice therapy and vocal surgery can dramatically improve a person's vocal quality... seemingly taking years away from how you sound.

In this story, Dr. Chang was quoted a few times and even included a patient he has treated successfully with voice surgery to restore his voice.

In regards to how aging can create muscle atrophy and bowing resulting in:

"It creates a breathy, raspy voice," says Christopher Y. Chang, an otolaryngologist at Fauquier Ear, Nose & Throat Consultants in Warrenton, Va.

Later in the WSJ article, surgical intervention is discussed and introduced Mr. James Driver, a Warrenton, VA jewelry repair storeowner who Dr. Chang treated:

"In the procedure, called injection augmentation of the vocal folds, a doctor threads an endoscope through the patient's nose or mouth into the throat, then injects a tiny amount of collagen, fat, hyaluronic acid or a gel filler into the vocal cords to plump them up. The substances usually last three to six months. If the procedure works, a doctor may recommend inserting silicon or Gore-Tex implants to fatten the cords permanently.

In 2011, James Driver was felled by an episode of temporary paralysis that left one of his vocal cords frozen. The 57-year-old owner of a Virginia jewelry-repair business worked with a therapist and did throat exercises on his own, but he could only manage a whisper. "You had to be right next to him with your ear to his mouth" to hear him, says his wife, Erin.

The couple sought out Dr. Chang, who recommended an injection. The day after the procedure, Mr. Driver was speaking at near regular volume. A year later, he's still going strong, though he hears his own voice as being slightly raspier than it used to be. "It made a huge difference," Mrs. Driver says."

New Minimally Invasive Technique to Treat Tonsil Stones Developed by Dr. Chang

Dr. Chang developed an innovative minimally invasive technique to treat tonsil stones using coblation technology. His findings have been published in this month's ENT Journal. In fact, his research made the front cover of the journal! Dr. Richard Thrasher of ENT Centers of Texas was a co-author in the study.

This technique called coblation tonsil cryptolysis is unique in that it can be performed in adult patients without sedation using only local anesthesia, much like laser tonsil cryptolysis. As with laser cryptolysis, pain is significant for only a few days and most adults can resume normal diet and activity within 1 week. In contrast, tonsillectomy entails significant morbidity for several weeks. However, coblation avoids the significant disadvantages of laser use, including the potential for airway fire, retinal damage from reflected scatter, dealing with plume from vaporized tissues, oral/facial burns, and the high cost of purchasing and maintaining laser equipment. After a single session of coblation tonsil cryptolysis, a significant decrease and even elimination of tonsil stones can potentially be achieved.
